    FAQ

    Can I generate with Tessera?

Tessera uses the WaveFunctionCollapse algorithm to generate things. This is a very flexible system, but it cannot do everything.

    • Tessera is tile based. This means it is worse at naturally shaped or curving things.
    • Tiles are generated based mostly of local constraints. That makes generations very uniform when you have a larger output size. So Tessera is not so good at large scale features, like you'd see in a map generator.

If in doubt, take a look at the list of samples for some ideas what Tessera can do.

    Why is my generation failing?

The nature of the WaveFunctionCollapse algorithm makes this very hard to answer in general.

The Errors and Contradiction section has some tips.

Why is Tessera slow when run in the Editor?

Turn off "Record Undo". More performance tips here.

    I'm getting weird compilation errors

Try deleting the Tessera folder, and re-installing from the asset store.

Does Tessera support editing maps, like Townscaper?

Not at present, sorry! Consider buying Wildtile instead (no affiliation).

How do I have make a hexagonal grid of hexagons?

The generator always makes a rhombus. make a rhombus larger than your desired size, then use volumes to cut the grid down to your ideal shape.
